Overview:
This course will clarify the challenges people with autism spectrum face in expressing their sexual feelings in ways considered appropriate by the wider community, and strategies that those supporting them can employ to empower and enable them to more effectively meet their needs and goals.
Intended Outcomes
- Identification and exploration of core communication/counselling skills and principles.
- Key communication skills in management of adults and children with autism
- Identification of participants ‘ existing skills and the development of new skills and strategies required when working with people with autism
- Responding appropriately to the person and the situation

- Wendy Lawson. Psychologist, author and inspirational speaker. Wendy is a popular speaker who will share her views and ideas on living life as a person with Autism. She will discuss her poetry to illustrate what it is like for her living with Autism.
- Robyn Steward Co-Presenter with Wendy Lawson. Robyn will be sharing her workshops with a young adult with Asperger’s Autism from the UK. Robyn is an artist who paints with her fingers www.robynsteward.com. Robyn will be using her artwork to illustrate in a practical way aspects of life with Autism as she sees it.
This conference continues to acknowledge and celebrate the important role that Disability Support Workers play in the lives of people with disabilities and recognises that they have a right and indeed a need for professional development. The conference is organised for, and maintains a particular focus on, the needs and perspectives of direct support staff.
The conference attracts over 500 delegates from all sectors of the disability community in Australia and New Zealand. With keynote speakers and workshops presented by leaders in their field, participants are provided with a great opportunity to learn about best practice and network with other support staff from many varied organisations.
